The week of March 2nd there will be a midterm exam over all of the assembly language materials. Once you begin you will have 3 hours to take the exam. The midterm will consist of about 30 questions. Most of the questions will be multiple choice, some will be short answer, and 3 of them will involve creating a short program.

This begins the "Installing Linux" part of the class. This material is significantly different than the 6502-based materials and you should find it to be somewhat easier to work through.

X-Server (Xorg) installation instructions.


1) Edit your /etc/make.conf file so that it has the following information:

USE="-qt3 -qt4 -arts -kde X dbus gtk gnome hal cairo consolekit"
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse virtualbox"
VIDEO_CARDS="virtualbox"


2) Install the X Server using the following instructions:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml


Note:

use

cd /root
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new -retro

instead of

X -config -retro /root/xorg.conf.new


3) If you already emerged the X Server using the ls2 book, edit your make.conf file and do the following:

emerge --deep --newuse world



4) Install the gnome desktop (gnome-light is recommended).
